An explanation of the firm's mark, and of the idea it borrows from.
Two nodes, separated, at the two ends of a single stroke. One is filled; the other is an open ring. Between them the stroke traces an N. Nothing occupies the centre.
The two nodes are not two objects joined by a line. They are two positions of one thing.
Two particles prepared together can end up in a state that cannot be written as “particle A is in state x, and particle B is in state y”. The pair has a state; the individuals do not. This is entanglement, and the property is called non-separability.
Measure one and the outcome of measuring the other is fixed — immediately, and regardless of the distance between them. Einstein called it spukhafte Fernwirkung, spooky action at a distance, and took it as evidence that quantum mechanics was incomplete. He was wrong, and it took four decades to show it: John Bell proved in 1964 that no local hidden-variable theory reproduces the correlations, and the experiments closing the remaining loopholes earned the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics.
What matters is not the strangeness but the reframing. Nothing travels between the particles. The correlation is not transmitted. It was never two systems to begin with — separateness was the wrong assumption, not the distance.
The open ring is deliberate. An entangled pair is indeterminate until one of them is measured.
The Upanishads return repeatedly to the claim that apparent separateness is a feature of how we look rather than of what is there. Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 3.1.1 — also at Ṛgveda 1.164.20 — opens: dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyā, “two birds, inseparable companions, cling to the same tree.” Two birds, one tree, read in the tradition as one self seen from two positions.
A caution worth stating plainly, because this territory attracts overreach: the Upanishads did not predict quantum mechanics. They contain no equations and made no testable predictions. Bell’s theorem is an empirical result about measurement statistics; the Upanishadic claim is metaphysical. They are different orders of claim and the resemblance is structural, not evidential.
What is shared — and it is a rare thing to share — is the suspicion that decomposing the world into separate parts is where intuition goes wrong. Two unconnected traditions, the same doubt about the same assumption.
There is one documented link, and it is not mystical. Schopenhauer led Erwin Schrödinger to the Upanishads and to Advaita Vedānta, and he stayed with them for life. On the problem of many observers and one world he concluded: “There is obviously only one alternative, namely the unification of minds or consciousnesses… This is the doctrine of the Upanishads.” The man who wrote the wave equation read these texts for fifty years.
Because it describes the method. A technical contradiction in TRIZ says that improving one parameter degrades another. The discipline of the method is the refusal to trade them — not to find the optimal compromise, but to hold both as one system until the opposition dissolves. The inventive solution is the one where the contradiction turns out to have been an artefact of how the problem was described.
That is the same move the mark draws. What looked like two competing things was one system, described badly.
